Nook vs. Kindle – Battle of the Ereaders

Both Barnes & Noble and Amazon may have created a buzz with their Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire but there is nothing like the simplicity of their original e-readers. We have already done a Kindle Vs. NOOK comparison and made a decision. This time, I will point out the reasons why the NOOK is better than the Kindle. In here I will clash the NOOK and Kindle and determine the best e-reader on the market. Here is my take on the NOOK Vs. Kindle debate.

LOOKS – Nook vs. Kindle

Nothing separates the Nook vs. Kindle that much when it comes to appearance.  Both have that grey look and they are almost the same size.  The thicker Nook is heavier at 7.48 ounces compared to Kindle’s 5.98.  But lightness does not really mean a thing when comparing e-readers; just as long as they are lighter than a real book then it is fine.

FEATURES – Nook vs. Kindle

The NOOK features a “breakthrough” E-ink display making it 25% faster than any other e-reader, including Kindle.  Its 6-inch touchscreen is the world’s most advanced E-ink pearl display.  The fonts look sharp and the sun does not give you a hard time while reading your books.  Amazon claims the same for their Kindle reader but you can easily see the difference when you go beyond the books, i.e. the user interface.  The clear texts, neat graphics plus better UI organization give the NOOK the edge when it comes to the display.

The In-store experience is another plus for NOOK users.  You can visit any B&N shop and download books for free.  But unlike the free books that Amazon offers for their Kindle users, B&N gives out premium books which are ordinarily sold outside B&N stores.  Besides the books, B&N also offers a lot of freebies for their regular visitors.

When it comes to the number of books to choose from, B&N has the advantage as it is originally a book store.  They have over 2.5 million titles as compared a million offered by Kindle.  You can also find a lot of cheap books at B&N’s online library without any hassle.  This means you can get them without those annoying ads that Amazon regularly supplies.

Battery life is important when reading e-books and NOOK does not disappoint.  You can charge once and the NOOK reader will last for a month!  Kindle will not last that long because of its 3G connectivity.  Amazon’s reader will spend the majority of its battery power looking for a 3G signal which is something NOOK users do not worry about.

Speaking of connectivity, the NOOK only supports Wi-Fi but that does not mean you won’t be enjoying the internet that much.  The simple fact that lack of 3G support equates to longer battery life is enough to consider the NOOK vs. Kindle.  You only need the internet for downloading books anyway and you can always go to any B&N store.

PRICE – Nook vs. Kindle

The pricing could trick you if you are someone who does not read the full advertisement.  NOOK is priced at $99 while the Kindle can be bought for only $79.  The Kindle is cheaper right?  NOT.  The original price of the Kindle is $109.  The $79 Kindle is the version with all those special offers.  What are those special offers?  An endless amount of advertisements which are really annoying if not useless.  At $99, you can get the NOOK with no ads bugging you all the time.  That is a $20 difference for a reading experience free of ads.
