Nokia Lumia vs. Apple iPhone

While the iPhone is the most popular brand for consumers, there is one that is rising to challenge it and Androids: the Nokia Lumia series. We are all familiar with Nokia – your first phone might have been a Nokia 3310 like mine. But after the iPhone was released and then followed by a slew of Android smartphones, the popular company went hiding into the shadows. The Lumia Series is a set of phones that looks to put Nokia into the map again as well as thrusting the Windows Phone operating system into prominence. The question is: should you go for a Nokia Lumia instead of an iPhone?

Nokia Lumia 800
It was the Lumia 800 which started the Windows Phone OS revolution in Nokia smartphones. At first glance, the Lumia 800 looks very much like the Nokia N9 but if you’ll look closely, you’ll notice that the Lumia 800 has a dedicated physical button for the cameras and the flash LEDs have been moved above the camera lens. Speaking of cameras, the Lumia 800 has one of the best cameras in a mobile phone: an 8MP shooter with Carl Zeiss lens and dual-led flash.

Nokia Lumia 710
The second of the Lumia Series, the 710 featured Windows Phone 7 Mango and its four exclusive applications: Nokia Drive; Nokia Maps; Nokia Music and App Highlights. The Nokia Drive intrigued many because it was one of the first turn by turn navigation systems in a mobile device. App Highlights – service suggesting software based on location and operator – also made some noise among mobile users. The Lumia 710 comes in white, yellow, pink, blue and black.

Nokia Lumia 900
The Lumia 900 was released a few months after the Lumia 710. The 900 was bigger and heavier than its predecessor but that would also mean that it had more to offer. The added bulk was because of the much higher capacity battery and the added height gave space to the larger 4.3” display. The Lumia 900 was also the first Windows Phone to support 4G LTE. Like the Lumia 800, the 900 comes equipped with an 8MP camera although this time, it is paired with a 1.3MP front shooter.

Nokia Lumia 820 vs. Lumia 920
The Newest Lumia Phones
The Lumia 820 and the Lumia 920 are the first to come out with Windows Phone 8 as their operating systems. And while Nokia calls the 920 as their current flagship phone, the 820 is aimed towards less-spending consumers. It doesn’t mean that the Lumia 820 is cheap; it’s just that it offers less than the other one.
- The Lumia 920 has a ridiculous 1280 x 768 resolution HD+ IPS screen while the 820 is stuck with an OLED display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

- The Lumia 920 comes with 32GB of internal storage while the 820 only has 8GB.
- The Lumia 920 has a bigger battery; its 2000 mAh power source allows the device to last for up to 10 hours of talk time and 400 hours of stand-by time. The 820 scores 8 hours and 330 hours on those areas respectively.
- Nokia proves that image quality from cameras does not depend on the pixels alone. The 920 only has an 8.7MP shooter but it offers better pictures compared to other phones because of its superior BSI sensor, similar to the Nokia Pureview 808. Meanwhile, the 820 has an 8MP camera but without the said sensor.

As the specs suggest, the Lumia Series can match the iPhones in terms of hardware. The only problem is that only a few people are convinced with the Windows Phone system. But if Microsoft steps up their game further specifically in offering a better ecosystem, I think the Lumias have a chance. The greatest strength of the iPhone is still Apple’s ecosystem so Microsoft has to outmatch that first.
